This twisted comedy is a psuedo-fictional account of the Marquis de Sade's life and death in France's Charenton Asylum. Apropos to The Marquis's "libertine dementia," the play is wrought with sex, violence, nudity, drugs, profanity, betrayal, torture, Grand Guignol hyperbole, and mellifluous language worthy of Shakespeare. To help create the atmosphere of giddy bacchanalia that accompanies The Marquis's stories, I composed extensive incidental and scene change music, totalling around 30 minutes altogether. Each cue is scored for string quartet, often performing extended techniques such as snap pizzicatos and artificial harmonics. MP3 samples of some of the cues are to your right. They were created using the Vienna Instruments Solo Strings sample library. The script demanded several involved sound cues as well, which I recorded and designed. One of these, a scene involving torture and the severing of several, shall we say, 'essential' body parts, is to your right. |
