SOLO / ELECTROACOUSTIC

Somewhere in Germany, 1945 (2010) - 16' - unaccompanied cello (PDF)

Commissioned by cellist Paul Dwyer, as part of a concert tour featuring five other University of Michigan composers, all writing on the motive FUCHS (F-C-C-B-Eb). This piece was inspired by my grandfather J.T. LeMay's service in World War II, and the letters he wrote back to his wife Bessie. Mr. Dwyer's premier tour included performances in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Oberlin, and Ann Arbor.

The Crab (2006) - 11' - electric cello, soundfile, video (PDF)

The result of the 2005-06 Hultgren/UAB Computer Music Ensemble Commissioning Prize. Co-sponsor Craig Hultgren plays the electric cello part, typically with the video/soundfile portion projected above him. The video, conceived as a modern silent film, is an allegorical tale of the danger of good ideas taken to their extreme conclusions. Mr. Hultgren premired The Crab on April 6, 2006, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and has since played it throughout the country and several more times in Alabama. See the complete video/recording below (in two parts):

ORCHESTRA / CHOIR

The Sleep of Reason Breeds Monsters (2007) - 18' - large orchestra (PDF)

While not programmatic, this tone poem for large orchestra is inspired by and reflective of Francisco Goya's important art and ideas, especially as portrayed in "El sueño de la razon produce monstruos." The poetry of Wallace Stevens, the art of Pablo Picasso, and birdcalls I recorded in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia served as addition inspiration. It is scored in a single continuous movement, roughly divided into seven sections. The excerpts below are from a sample-library version I produced (the piece has yet to premier):

"Massacre"

"Lynx"

"Mice"
