Marc LeMay Music

Marc LeMay is a composer, performer, and educator from Birmingham, Alabama, currently living and working in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Marc composes music in a variety of mediums, including:

Orchestral and chamber works
Electroacoustic pieces
Jazz tunes
Film scores
Music for theatre and dance
Arrangements for pop songs

His works have been heard throughout Alabama, with recent performances also in New York, Ann Arbor, St. Louis, and Bowling Green, Ohio. His compositional goal is to make music that sounds good. Among many influences, his include: the music of Olivier Messiaen, Bartók, Stravinsky, Charles Mingus; art, poetry, good food, and good communion.

As a performer, Marc has played in a variety of settings:

Professional classical guitarist for weddings, parties, and other events
Electric guitarist with the BAMA Players
Guitar, bass, keyboards, saxophone, clarinet, and vocals for a variety of popular music ventures
Guitarist for the theatre, most recently for the Alabama Shakespeare Festival’s production of Man of La Mancha
Budding piano player (he prefers not to use the label "budding pianist")

As an educator, Marc has served as:

Graduate Student Instructor in Music Theory, the University of Michigan
Adjunct Instructor teaching courses in Music Fundamentals, Technology, and Appreciation at the University of Alabama at Birmingham
Private guitar instructor to over 70 students in the past four years

In 2007, Marc earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music with a concentration in Music Technology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His composition teachers were Michael Angell and Ronald Clemmons. He graduated with numerous awards and honors, including:

Dean’s Award for the School of Arts and Humanities
Department of Music’s Outstanding Undergraduate Student
Summa cum laude

He is currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree in Composition from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance; where has studied with Bright Sheng and Erik Santos.

He came to study music after exploring photography, filmmaking, theatre, writing, and rock stardom in his youth. Marc is a fixture in the Birmingham theatre community as a sound designer and occasional stage manager. He is professionally affiliated with:
