These six short pieces for unaccompanied saxophone explore the varied nuances possible with the instrument, from plaintive moans to fierce chromatic runs to raucous declamation. Each piece is based on a scene from a short story by the little-known writer Vellison Trimark, entitled “Liko the Unicyclist.” It is the story of a manic-depressive unicyclist, Liko, and his stormy romance with a preacher’s daughter. In the end, Liko and the girl ride together into an obliterating sunset, evaporating under the weight of their harried emotions. Danny Hawthorne-Foss premiered four of the six movements in 2009. Recordings to your right. |
