Based on a text of mine, this piece employs digitally manipulated voiceovers, synthesized sounds, and live marimba with two cymbals. The poem is stretched out across four continuous sections: (I) Introduction; (II) Fugue; (III) Adagio; and (IV) Surroundeau. The first and last sections are largely improvised by the live performer, and the “lists” you hear in those sections were written and recited by the members of the 2005 University of Alabama at Birmingham Computer Music Ensemble. Almost all the sounds in the soundfile are manipulations of individual words, phrases, or phonemes drawn from the poem. As the Fugue section pushes forward, these sounds become increasingly layered and incomprehensible until the return of the group lists in the last section. Lists premiered at the Fall 2005 UAB Computer Music Ensemble Concert, with Diedra Robinson performing.
